Yvonne Joyce
Craig (May 16, 1937 - August 17 in 2015) was an American actress and ballet
dancer famous for her part as Batgirl in the 1960s television series Batman and
as the green-skinned Orion slave girl Marta in the Star Trek episode "Whom
Gods Destroy" (1969). The Huffington Post called her "a pioneer in
female superheroes" for television. Yvonne Craig was born in Taylorville,
Illinois, and was raised in Columbus, Ohio. Her family relocated in 1951 from Illinois
to Dallas. There , she was a student at W. H. Adamson High School in Dallas and
Sunset High School. However, she did not graduate as she didn't have "one
credits for PE". Craig was discovered by Alexandra Danilova (a ballerina
and teacher) and joined the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo in 1951, becoming the
youngest corps de ballet member. As she performed as Batgirl, this training
proved to be very helpful. She left the ballet company in the year 1957
"over disagreements over casting decisions" and relocated to Los
Angeles in the hopes of pursuing her dance career, but she was cast in films.
The first time she was seen was in an TV episode of Perry Mason ("The Case
of the Lazy Lover") as well as Neil Hamilton. Hamilton later was appointed
Batgirl's Police Commissioner James Gordon. Following her appearances in The
Young Land, The Gene Krupa Story (all 1959), and Gidget (all 1958) she also
appeared as Beverly Mills on the TV show Mr. Lucky (also 1959). Craig was seen
in the films Bing Crosby and Seven Women from Hell (1960), where she was in a
duet with Cesar Romero. In 1962, she appeared as a guest star in the Western
Laramie episode "The Long Road Back". Craig also starred with Elvis
Presley in the roles of happened at the World's Fair (1963), and Kissin Cousins
(64). She also starred as an Russian dancer alongside James Coburn in Mars
Needs Women (1966).
